Join us for an intensive one-day executive development program designed especially for corporate attorneys in the San Diego area. The Rady Center for Executive Development’s ACCA Mini-MBA program is led by distinguished faculty from both within and outside the UC family. This highly interactive program focuses on three practical business management topics.
CASH FLOW MANAGEMENT FOR GROWTH
Instructor: David Ravetch has been a UCLA accounting faculty member for over twenty-five years and received numerous teaching awards, as well as the California Society of Certified Public Accountants’ Faculty Merit Award.
Businesses that survive through the startup phase are likely growing and profitable. Executives frequently discover that growth businesses face significant cash flow management problems. With an understanding of cash flow management, executives can manage the growth of their company and ensure that they will have enough cash to support that growth and to allow their managers to focus on performing their jobs.
This session covers four key components of successful cash flow management in a growth company:
• Understanding that profit and cash are not the same
• Measuring and monitoring cash flow performance through financial ratios
• Being aware of the link between growth and the corresponding demands on cash
• Creating operating strategies and tactics for maximizing cash flow
SPURRING CREATIVITY IN TIMES OF CRISIS
Instructor: Robert Epstein, Ph.D. is a psychologist, researcher and writer. He is a contributing editor for Scientific American Mind and the former editor-in-chief of Psychology Today, as well a visiting scholar at the University of California San Diego.
Companies value creative output. Whether your goal is to survive, compete or flourish, boosting innovation and creativity will enable your company to meet its goals. Learn how to get more out of your employees and current resources to increase output simply and quickly. Such skills are helpful to any organization, but for those companies in crisis, they are essential. Through exercises, case studies and a quick overview of relevant research, you’ll discover that small tweaks in your company’s procedures can quickly boost creative output in your employees.
Topics include:
• Encouraging competencies that boost creativity and innovation
• Assessing the current state of your company’s creativity and innovation readiness
• Embedding practices into every level of your organization’s operations to boost creativity permanently
RISK-ADJUSTED RETURN ON INVESTMENT
Instructor: Rossen Valkanov, Ph.D. is an associate professor of finance in the Rady School whose work has been published in top finance and econometrics journals. He was previously an assistant professor of finance at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management and the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Management.
Companies often employ a strict return-on-investment model with a single hurdle rate to make important decisions on purchasing, production strategies, projects bids and more. However, this strategy is limited and in many cases leads to high return-on-investment proposals never coming to fruition. Furthermore, the decisions made can occupy all of a company’s resources and still leave them strapped for cash. One solution is to move away from this simplistic approach and implement a system based on risk-adjusted return on investment. Factoring in risk can keep the cash flowing and ensures that valuable resources are being used effectively.
This session will show you how to:
• Plot various risk profiles for your projects
• Develop expected returns on those projects
• Create a decision system to determine an optimal mix of risk-adjusted returns
