The Veasey Report: DOJ Abuses Continue
"I am deeply concerned about lawlessness in the executive offices of
the Department of Justice, disregarding fundamental fairness ... This
administration rewrote the rules in 2003 in issuing the Thompson Memo."
- Senator Patrick Leahy, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee
"This Committee needs to move forward to mark up and to vote on
this legislation ... As a former prosecutor, I can tell you that you
don't prove the case out of the mouth of the defendant."
- Senator Arlen Spector, Ranking Member of the
Senate Judiciary Committee and leading sponsor of the Attorney-Client
Privilege Protection Act of 2007
(At hearings on September 18, 2007 considering the DOJ's McNulty Memo and the need to enact legislation to protect the privilege from prosecutorial and enforcement practices that coerce privilege waivers in exchange for cooperation credit.)
The Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Senator Leahy, held hearings on Tuesday, September 18, to consider the Attorney-Client Privilege Protection Act of 2007. ACC and its coalition partners were proud to submit The Veasey Report, a compilation of stories that relate prosecutorial and enforcement authority abuse of corporate privilege rights that was authored (on a neutral, pro bono basis) by former Delaware Chief Justice E. Norman Veasey. To read The Veasey Report, click here. For more on the hearing and ACC’s work to protect privilege, click here.
