ACC Urges Congress to Increase Judicial Pay

ACC filed letters with Judiciary Committee leadership in both the House and Senate on June 11, urging them to support a significant increase in federal judicial pay.  The letters note that "reasonable compensation is an integral part of the country's fair bargain with the federal judiciary and is necessary to furthering the constitutional design expressed in Article III of judges who service for life. Only appropriate pay levels will enable the federal bench to continue to attract and retain the very best of the legal profession from all backgrounds and economic situations."

Corporate Counsel Recognized at Global Counsel Awards
Thursday, June 28, was an exciting night for corporate counsel as hundreds of people gathered for the first time from around the world for the 2007 Global Counsel Awards. The gala was hosted by ACC and the International Law Office to recognize lawyers for demonstrable achievements across the full spectrum of in-house responsibility, not simply those who have acted on high-profile transactions. More than 2,300 individual nominations were submitted from senior corporate counsel and law firm partners, and reviewed by the International Law Office research team for selection.

Take Part in New Compensation Surveys
ACC has negotiated an arrangement with Empsight International, LLC to offer two in-house counsel compensation surveys to members at a discount. Both surveys will contain data broken down by job titles and factors such as company revenue, geography, size of department, and industry. We need your help in making these as robust as possible.

• For large law departments, take part in the Corporate Law Compensation and Management Survey. You should register at the Empsight/ACC survey page and use the promotional code:  2007accempsight. The deadline for participation is July 16.
• For small law departments (less than 10 attorneys, revenues less than $1.5 billion) please participate in a brief online survey to help us in the development of this new research tool.

What Are Your “Two Cents” on the Monthly eNewsletter?

How can we improve the Monthly Member Update for you? We know that your time is valueable and you need resources and information to help you do your job more effectively. So let us know what we can do to help in this month’s “Two Cents Survey”.

Last month, we asked you if associate pay raises would make it more difficult to attract and retain top candidates for in-house legal positions and there was an overwhelming response (77%) of “yes.” When asked if you thought $160,000 was an ‘appropriate’ salary for a first-year law firm associate, here’s what you had to say:

•    Roughly 68 percent thought the salary was much too high
•    30 percent said it was somewhat too high
