Message from the Chair

Happy December! It’s hard to believe that another year has come and gone, and it seems the older I get the faster the holidays come around. I love driving through my neighborhood and looking at the various light displays; it’s so cheery at the end of a long day. For many of us (myself included), 2017 has been a mixture of great happiness, big changes, and profound loss. The lights and decorations never fail to lift my spirits and give me hope for the New Year to come. No matter your particular circumstances, I hope the twinkling lights of the holidays (especially the Griswold, ‘over the top’ displays that can be seen from the International Space Station) lift your spirits, also.

The end of 2017 also ushers in the new year of 2018. The New Year brings with it a fresh start, newfound resolutions on improving our lives, and excitement for things to come. Here at SLD, we are excited about some new initiatives and additions to our communications. If you read my November email, you know that one of our focuses this year is on attorney health and wellbeing.  Part of attorney health is recognizing that we are SO much more than attorneys. We are husbands and wives, moms and dads, grandparents, children, the ‘go-to’ friend, and community volunteers.  Because we lead such varied lives, we are starting a new column in the Quarterly Newsletter.  We want to spotlight our members who have interesting hobbies and do good work in the communities they serve. Our inaugural spotlight shines bright on Stephanie Flittner, the GC for Sterling Boiler & Mechanical in Evansville, Indiana.  In addition to being GC, Stephanie is a busy wife and mom who also manages to find time to write a lifestyle blog Modern Moochi (https://modernmoochi.com/). I started reading it last week and I’m already a huge fan (her recipe for Pear and Blue Cheese Pork Chops is incredible)! Modern Moochi has a section called “Fit with Flit” that ties in to our SLD health and wellness theme. See below for a full spotlight.   If you would like to be featured in a future Newsletter, please send your information to Amy Cline, our Newsletter Editor, at clineamy@yahoo.com.

I met Stephanie at the Annual Meeting, when she volunteered to write on fitness for our Newsletter.  If you have a great idea for the committee, or would like to be more involved, please contact me at sheriee@svmic.com

I wish you peace, love, health, happiness and the very best for 2018.

Best,

Sherie Edwards

Wellness Focus

Why, oh why, did we fight taking a nap when we were kids?  Isn’t the thought of curling up with a blanket and taking a 20 minutes nap (yes, with the milk and cookies afterward) a wonderful memory?  With our busy lives, one of the first areas of health we shortchange is sleep! Studies have shown that lack of sleep impacts our memory, our mental sharpness, our weight, and can have a detrimental impact on our hormones.  For more information on the importance of sleep, check out https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/health-topics/topics/sdd/why [return to top]

SLD Member Highlight - Stephanie A. Flittner, General Counsel, Sterling Boiler & Mechanical, LLC

“I started ModernMoochi.com as a creative outlet and to show my passions outside of the legal field. I lost 70 pounds after I had my son and wanted to document how I did it and show other professional moms with busy lifestyles how I fit a healthy lifestyle into my hectic life. I am an avid reader of fashion and lifestyle blogs, but I found most of the looks a little too edgy or young for a 30-something mom who is the legal counsel of her company. I decided to start my own blog to show how a real woman has a career, raises a family, gets fit and looks fabulous while doing it.”  https://modernmoochi.com/ [return to top]

Bringing SLD to a Location Near You

As we all know, being an SLD member is a great way to find resources for your daily practice.  But, have you ever thought it would be great to know fellow SLD members in your geographic area?  That’s the idea behind micro-networking. We are looking for volunteers to help coordinate introductory micro-networking events at the local chapter level. These events could be a breakfast, a lunch, a happy hour, or even an outing to the local ball game.

For more information on how you can volunteer, please contact Stephanie Bortnyk, Chapter Relations Chair, at Stephanie.Bortnyk@FalconJet.com.  [return to top]

On the SLD Webpage

The SLD webpage is a treasure trove of resources curated for you, the Small Law Department practitioner. On the webpage you’ll find information about recent eGroup threads (if you have a question about how to do something, chances are someone else has the same question and other members have sage advice to share), upcoming SLD Legal Quick Hits, and resources developed by and for the SLD committee. This is also where you will find links to archived resources such as Legal Quick Hits and Virtual Roundtables so that you can view them at a place and time convenient to you.  If you can’t find what you’re looking for, let us know. That might lead to a new resource for all of us!  You can find the webpage here: https://www.acc.com/committees/sldc/index.cfm [return to top]
