About the Environmental & Sustainability Network

The Environmental & Sustainability Network exists to enhance the ability of ACC members to practice environmental law and to provide support for the development of related programs within their client companies for both operations and products, including aspects of sustainable development and health and safety issues related to environmental law. The group shall act as a network for its members to further their knowledge and expertise in environmental law, to expand access to resources, and to enhance skills to advise and represent their clients on related matters.

Chair Spotlight/Message From the Chair

Greetings from the Environmental & Sustainability Network!  I am Jenny McClister, E&S Network Chair.  We took a hiatus from our newsletter for a number of months but now we are back!  We have an enthusiastic leadership group and I am optimistic about the network’s future.  The practice of environmental and sustainability law is expanding.  In the early years of environmental law, the regulated community was a discrete group.  Fast forward to the present and most businesses are touched in some way by the expanding reach of environmental law and the catch-all phrase of “sustainability” law (laws focused on the impact of business operations on individuals and communities now and into the future).  Environmental laws started by regulating “polluters”.  While that focus has remained, the law has expanded and continues to expand to consider indirect and future impacts of a variety of business operations (for example, chemical restrictions in products, energy efficiency of devices, and extended producer responsibilities).  In addition, new challenges have come into focus – notably climate change – that require revisiting some of the tenets upon which environmental laws were founded (for example, moving from a “cradle to grave” to “cradle to cradle” approach to resource management).

While some companies have one or more environmental/sustainability attorneys, most companies do not.  Which means in-house lawyers without a background in this area will need to advise their companies sooner or later on environmental or sustainability laws that impact their businesses.  That’s one area in which our network can help.  Many of our members are experienced environmental and sustainability lawyers who are willing to answer questions in our eGroup.  Sometimes all a generalist needs is to be pointed in the right direction to find the answers they need.  And for our experienced members, our network offers robust programming on emerging areas of interest in environmental and sustainability law, tailored to the in-house practitioner.  Wherever you fall on this spectrum, our goal is to be a resource for you.  Please join us, and tell us what you need.  As I said, environmental and sustainability law is expanding.  There’s no time like the present to dive in and join us on this journey!
