Message from the Chair
Sherie Edwards

Hi there!

Can you feel it?  Spring is right around the corner! As I sit and write this message, it is a balmy 75 degrees in Nashville.  In February. I don’t know about you, but Spring makes me think of all things new—new fitness routines outside to take advantage of the longer days, new meal plans worked around seasonal produce, a new baseball season (c’mon Phillies!), and new SLD resources. Okay, so maybe SLD resources aren’t first to mind, but we do have some great new Top Ten resources on the SLD webpage courtesy of our friends at Meritas. We will also shortly announce our SLD sessions for the Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas (music AND barbeque? Sign me up!), and new webinars and roundtables.  Be sure to watch eGroups and the SLD webpage for a Call for Speakers for upcoming online and in person educational opportunities.

Some of your fellow SLD members have been hard at work writing articles for The Docket. We also have links to blog posts by our own Stephanie Flittner on fitness topics you may find interesting.  Finally, we are shining the spotlight on a few of our SLD leaders. This is an interesting group of folks!

As we work to put together educational offerings for the next several months, we’d really like to know what YOU want to learn, whether it be a legal topic or professional/personal development.  Please feel free to email me at sheriee@svmic.com with suggestions, comments, or just to say hi. I enjoy hearing from you!  In fact, the first 10 readers to email me their favorite vacation spot will receive a $10 Starbucks card, because coffee is the elixir of life.

I hope you have a wonderful Spring (or Fall, for our friends south of the Equator). “See you” on our next call!

Best,

Sherie Edwards

Annual Meeting Update

Y'all are the best! You submitted 100 ideas for Annual Meeting sessions. Leadership pared these down to eight submissions, and we will soon learn which programs SLD will sponsor at Annual Meeting. Be sure to watch for the Call for Speakers sometime in March (tip: don’t just watch for SLD but any committee to which you belong). The Annual Meeting is October 21-24 in Austin, Texas and is always a great time for CLE, networking, and catching up with friends. Don’t miss it!

Wellness Focus
Yikes! Summer really isn’t that far away and this is usually the time we start to think about dropping some of the winter weight we’ve gained (think Girl Scout cookies and Valentine candy, plus comfort foods like mac and cheese…). Whether you’re starting (or in my case, re-starting) a fitness and healthy eating routine to look better or for health reasons, it helps to have someone else to whom you are accountable and will hold you to your goals. Stephanie Flittner, General Counsel by day and Modern Moochi blogger by night, wrote a recent blog post on accountability. Read it here (https://modernmoochi.com/2017/10/19/why-i-choose-to-post-about-my-diet-and-fitness-online/), and check out some of her other posts (she has a killer step climber workout here https://modernmoochi.com/2017/10/26/what-to-do-on-the-stairclimber-youll-be-hot-sweaty-and-everything-except-bored-with-my-workouts/).

SLD Member Highlight - Your Leadership

Stephanie Bortnyk, Chapter Relations Chair: Stephanie is AGC to Dassault Falcon Jet Corporation in Little Ferry, NJ.  Her legal team is responsible for all legal issues ranging from aircraft sales, supply chain management, regulatory issues, employment claims, all the way to the most basic agreements for catering services. She has been a member of SLD since  2011, and loves the resources.  Her top three resources are Lexology newsstand, forms, and The Docket. Fun Fact:  Stephanie recently obtained a graduate certificate in Project Management from Penn State and is pursuing her MBA when chasing after her 6 and  8-year-old children.

Jacquie Lindsey, Online Learning Chair:  Jacquie is AGC for Nuvera Fuel Cells, LLC in Greeneville, NC.  She has been a member since June 0f 2005, and her favorite reason for being a member  is ‘all the great people I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with.”  Fun fact:  in her spare time, Jacquie tests recipes for a cooking magazine!

Jeff Wheeler, Immediate Past President and ACC Board Member:  Jeff is AGC for Numotion in Brentwood, Tennessee.  His primary focus is on regulatory and compliance issues, but he also handles contract and transactional work.  He joined SLD in October of 2005.  Although it isn’t why he joined initially, a huge part of why he stays is the many friendships he has made through SLD.

Gulam Zade, Secretary/Programs Chair: Gulam is CAO and GC for LOGICFORCE in Nashville, Tennessee, where he oversees Legal, HR, Risk and Administration.  He has been a member of SLD for four years and states “By far my favorite reason (for being a member) is the great people!  The connections I’ve made through SLD have been great, both professionally and personally.”  Fun Fact: Gulam has tri-citizenship.

LUNCH!

“Micro-network,” “Pop-up-lunch,” or “Explore local synergies.” These are all good phrases you can use on your boss or direct reports to let them know you will be out of the office making connections. Take one or two hours out of your schedule monthly or quarterly to socialize with a local SLD member and see what you can learn! Talk to a peer about topics that might be frustrating your department to see if they have already solved the problem. Some of our chapters are already having regular lunch meetings, but for those of you who don’t know how to get started, please contact Stephanie Bortnyk at Stephanie.Bortnyk@FalconJet.com and she can provide you some tips to get started and possibly a few names of people in your area.
