Message from the Chair
Josh Torres

After coming back from this year’s Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, I realized that Halloween was just a couple of weeks away, and I still didn’t know what our annual family costume would be. I quickly panicked because it’s such a special family tradition and I want to make sure it didn’t pass me by! Like most of you, I rarely feel like my family is totally prepared for the next special occasion, and yet, when we look back, these amazing moments frequently tend to pass us by too quickly.

As I look to the start of our new year in the ITPEC Committee, I want to make sure we’re as prepared as possible to make sure we enjoy the great moments fully and they don’t merely fly by! We have an amazing leadership team in place and I’m looking forward to creating a memorable year for all involved.

I want to welcome back some key members of our leadership team and please join me in extending a warm welcome to new members that are joining the committee leadership. As you can see, our roster isn’t completely full and we’re always looking for more great people to come join our team. We’re open to any self-starter who wants to dig in and make a tremendous impact in our committee. We’re driven by our passions and working together to make this the best year yet! If you’re interested in joining, please email me at jtorres@ebsco.com or call me at 205.991.1183.  I’d love to hear from you!

Sincerely,

Josh Torres

Member Spotlight
Katia Bloom

Katia lives by the mantra “People first, lawyers second.” She has been bringing this attitude to the ITPEC committee leadership for years pitching in wherever is needed. Katia has held many roles as part of the ITPEC committee ranging from co-chairing the annual meeting committee to the program committee. She was awarded the Jonathan S. Silber Committee Member of the Year Award in 2016 and was an ACC Top 10 30-Something 2017 award winner. This year, Katia is stepping up into the Vice-Chair role, so we thought it would be great to learn a little more about Katia:

Q: We all know that being in-house counsel can be quite stressful, how do you cope with the stress?
A: When I was a child, my family fled Latvia, a small country on the Baltic Sea, which, at the time, was a part of the Soviet Union. We were stripped of our Soviet citizenship and were, actually, citizens of nowhere. When you leave your home with a suitcase per person and watch your family start from scratch, you just have perspective that, at the end of the day, it could all go away, and you would still be more fortunate than so many other people in the world. On the hard days, I never forget how privileged I am.

Q: What kind of impact would you like to make in the profession?

I feel tremendous responsibility to give back to a profession that has been so good to me. Whenever recent graduates meet with me, I’m quick to remind them that you won’t get anywhere without genuinely helping others. You just never know how a connection today will help in five years. Imagine what we could achieve if everyone thought about how they could help someone else? As a third-generation female attorney, I am also passionate about helping women achieve equality and success both in the legal profession and the corporate world as a whole. I’m the co-founder of two organizations, SunLaw and WISE, aimed at achieving this goal.

Q: What are some professional challenges you’ve overcome?
A: Well, I started my career off as the only in-house counsel at a public company – so, I haven’t exactly had a traditional career path. Likely the most challenging has been starting both of my last two jobs pregnant. We have a running joke in my household that I need to be pregnant in order to switch jobs. What can I say — women have children, and I never thought that should stop me from taking on a new challenge that I can turn into my next opportunity. One of the best professional experiences I’ve had resulted from cofounding a law firm in 2008, during the “Great Recession.” This experience made me comfortable with being uncomfortable. Ultimately, letting go of knowing it all frees up so much of your time!
