Message from the Chair
Matt Nolan, General Counsel of the Ancra Group, Director of Heico Global Compliance

It's been a busy three months since our last newsletter, both for the LDMC and for me professionally (as I'm sure it has been for many of you). Our three monthly member calls we've held since then have been well attended, and have spanned outside counsel management, how to bridge generational gaps in your department, and top items to keep in mind as you counsel your business as a result of the administration change in Washington, D.C. eGroups via the ACC website have remained an active place for members to ask and receive peer-to-peer advice regarding a wide range of topics, and we've submitted a slate of programs for ACC's consideration for October's Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. that we think you're going to be excited about.  While staying focused on issues that department management needs to keep top of mind, we're striving to cover the wide spectrum of what that covers with digestible, helpful information that you can apply in real-time. Our executive team has been working hard for you, and I think the results are showing.

Personally, I started work this year in a new position with The Heico Companies, serving dual roles as General Counsel of the Ancra Group, as well as Director of Heico's Global Compliance. New faces, new businesses, new systems and new issues abound, but the urgency of a transition is helping bring a variety of topics top-of-mind to feed into LDMC questions and content. A moment like this truly does bring to the fore the importance of the resources and networks that can be available to each of us via ACC that can serve as a lifeline in getting up to speed much more quickly than otherwise possible (and in continuing to support our work over time!). Starting a new position also comes with a level of freedom - fresh eyes and clients who are braced for transition can help create opportunities for improvement that can be harder to motivate once established. I also recently hired my first direct report, putting a new perspective on management issues for me - LDMC service and work really do operate in a symbiotic manner sometimes.

We are always looking for new volunteers, experienced or otherwise, to help our committee's work and bring us fresh perspectives - please reach out and let me know if you would like to contribute in any way (or would like to hear about what we're specifically looking for, in a few instances). Keep your eyes out for Annual Meeting details, we hope to hear you on committee calls in the near future, and do let us know how we can even better serve your needs as a member.

Hello LDMC Members,

2017 is off to a great start! We are excited to continue our work alongside the LDMC Executive Committee and encourage you all to continue to reach out with programming suggestions.

If you were unable to attend the monthly meetings so far this year, please log in to the ACC website and find the presentations and recordings for past events:

January LQH: What Do People Really Want From the Workplace?

Tracey Wik, Vice President of Development Solutions at GrowthPlay shared insights about what the five generations working side by side want from the workplace, and how to implement best practices for communication preferences, feedback styles, and overall employee development and motivation that will span the generations.

February LQH: How Do We Proactively Manage Outside Counsel

Lizzie Shilliam, Senior Director of Chief Administrative Office Operations, The Hertz Corporation, provided guidance on collaborative relationship between the law department and the law firms and how this collaboration will allow ongoing discussions to elevate the performance of both.

If you missed the March 8 monthly meeting, you can access the recording via the archive link here. Leon Rodriguez, former director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services at the Department of Homeland Security, spoke about Tips for Managing Immigration in 2017. In April, we plan to tackle e-Billing Best Practices and Readiness: From Angst to Assurance.

We hope you all are enjoying the new year and are ready for the spring. Please be sure to join the monthly meetings and check the LDMC events page for updated programming.
