Message from the Chair

Hello everyone --

As Chair of the Financial Services Committee, I look forward to the opportunity to serve our broad, growing membership of more than 2,800 in-house counsel.  I also want to thank our 2016 Chair, Miriam Lefkowitz, for her energy, hard work and leadership this past year. Among other things, we offered outstanding programming, with record attendance at the FSC sponsored panels at the Annual Meeting, successful advocacy on behalf of the membership, and a great series of Legal Quick Hits on a wide range of topics.  Special kudos to Miriam and our program chairs for FSC’s Supreme Court panel at the Annual Meeting. This was an incredibly well attended session, which featured two highly respected jurists:  The Hon. Alex Kozinski of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the Hon. James L. Robart, Senior US District Judge, U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, who earlier this month issued a widely publicized order staying enforcement of President Trump’s travel ban on citizens from seven predominantly Muslim countries.

Our goal for 2017 is to keep the momentum going and build upon the FSC’s 2016 accomplishments. To this end, I am pleased to announce that the law firm of BakerHostetler has been selected as our new Committee Sponsor for 2017.  We are excited to work with them in putting together valuable and useful programming and materials for the members of the FSC and the entire ACC.

In addition, the FSC will again sponsor a panel at the Annual Meeting on Hot Cases in the US Supreme Court and Federal Courts, as well as a panel co-sponsor with the Real estate Committee, Regulatory Turmoil During Trump’s First Year: Providing Advice When US Regulatory Change or Repeal Is Occurring, Imminent, or Uncertain. We also have a number of interesting Quick Hits already lined up into the second quarter and a lot of other great offerings to augment the many other resources provided by the FSC and others at ACC, such as the ACC Docket, ACC Docket Briefings, ACC's Blog (www.inhouseACCess.com), InfoPAKs, and QuickCounsels, all of which are available on the ACC website.

I also invite you to join the FSC business meetings and Legal Quick Hits on the fourth Wednesday of every month from 3:00-4:00 pm eastern time.  The leadership provides updates on Committee activities, while the Quick Hit offers a ½ hour discussion of a substantive topic. Click here for the dial-in number to the committee meetings, which you will also find at the top of the meeting agendas that are available on the FSC website .

We are fortunate to have a fantastic group of subcommittee Chairs to carry things forward in 2017. While we have a great team in place, we are always looking for Committee members who want to get more involved, either through a leadership position or on individual projects and programs, and we encourage all members to take advantage of these opportunities. Whether you are at a large bank, a small broker/dealer, a local credit union or an international insurance company, the FSC is a great source of information and contacts across the broad scope of financial services practices. If you want to get involved, or if you have any questions or suggestions on how the Committee can better serve your needs, please reach out to me or any other member of the leadership team.

The “So-Called Judge” is One of Ours!

The "so-called judge" who issued the restraining order on President Trump's executive order regarding immigration was a panelist on the Committee's "Supreme Court Issues and Cases Update" program at the 2016 Annual Meeting.  9th Circuit Judge James L. Robart issued the TRO and we were delighted to have him in October at the Annual Meeting.
