Message from the Chair

Hello everyone --

We have new neighbors on both sides of us this year, and I recently discovered they’re both very fond of holiday decoration (and that my neighbor on the SW side is not at all afraid of remarkably large ladders). I’d like to tell you I learned this the weekend after Thanksgiving, but no, this became apparent at least a week before. I’m not sure if there’s an ongoing competition between the two, but I see signs of periodic escalation on both sides. So far, neither has reached Griswoldian proportions, but I wouldn’t rule it (on in the case of the SW neighbor, a trip to the ER) just yet. I’m nowhere close to being that ready for the holiday season, but I am ready to get our new year in the Small Law Department Committee off to a good start!

Please join me in welcoming the newest member of the SLD leadership team -- Brian Campbell, GC and VP of Business & Legal Affairs at DHI Group in New York is our new Membership Chair! Brian brings lots of good experience and energy to this role, and we’re very excited to have him on board.

Our roster isn’t completely full just yet, though. If, as you read this newsletter, you’re thinking to yourself “it’d be amazing to be the person responsible for making this publication happen,” or maybe “these bozos need some serious help with this newsletter,” “Jeff sorely needs an editor,” or any combination of the above, we’d love to talk with you about becoming our next Newsletter Editor. These come out quarterly, so it’s a good opportunity to get more involved without a big time commitment. If you’re interested, please email me at jeff.wheeler@tricenturion.com, or give me a call at 803.264.7502.

Happy Holidays to all!
Jeff Wheeler
SLD Chair

Annual Meeting Recap

The 2016 Annual Meeting was an attendance record breaker! SLD sponsored or co-sponsored great programming, the Hob Nob at the Presidio was a hit, and the SLD party, put on by our wonderful sponsors at Meritas and held at the Tonga Room at the Fairmont, was the stuff of legends (have you ever seen a lake in a hotel with a floating band stage? Unbelievable!). Please mark your calendars for the 2017 Annual Meeting, to be held October 16-18 in the sleepy little town of Washington, D.C. (you know, nothing ever really happens there!). And, speaking of the 2017 AM…

Hmm, I wonder if there are other SLD members in my town?

As we all know, being an SLD member is a great resource. But, have you ever thought it would be great to know fellow SLD members in your geographic area? That’s the idea behind micro-networking. We are looking for volunteers to help coordinate introductory micro-networking events at the local chapter level. These events could be a breakfast, a lunch, a happy hour, or even an outing to the local ball game. For more information on how you can volunteer, please contact Brian Campbell, Membership Chair, at sld@accglobal.com.

On the SLD Webpage

If you haven’t checked out the SLD webpage recently, make a note on your calendar to take a peek soon. The webpage is a great resource for you, with information about recent eGroup threads (if you have a question about how to do something, chances are someone else has the same question and other members have sage advice to share), upcoming SLD Legal Quick Hits, and resources developed by and for the SLD committee. This is also where you will find links to archived resources such as Legal Quick Hits and Virtual Roundtables so that you can view them at a place and time convenient to you.
