Updates From ACC Committees

Message from Kerry Childe, Chair, IT, Privacy, and eCommerce Committee

Greetings! This newsletter is bittersweet for me – it’s my last as Chair of this Committee. I have had such a great time as a member of the Committee Leadership, and I am so proud of all the work that we’ve done. In the time I’ve been on our executive leadership team, we’ve acquired a great sponsor in the form of Fieldfisher (they were Field Fisher Waterhouse when we first knew them); put together dozens of hours’ worth of CLE for the Annual Meeting; hosted a Meet the Regulators meeting; partnered with chapters and other committees for webinars, in-person meetings, and quick hits; and provided pages upon pages of help, recommendations, advice, and support in our eGroup, Docket articles, forms, Top 10s, and quick counsel. We’re even writing an InfoPak on Big Data!  We do so much great work in service to our committee, ACC, and the broader community, and I couldn’t be more proud.

This year especially has been a year of transition for our leadership. I will admit it feels some days like we’re changing tires while rolling down the highway, but our leadership team, listed on our committee leadership page and at the end of this newsletter, have worked very hard to continue to present the kind of information you expect from ACC and this committee: timely, informative, helpful, and practical. I know that your leadership team next year will continue to do that.  If you want to make sure it happens, though, you should volunteer! Many hands make light work, and that’s true for this Committee as well. Contact us and let us know if you’d like to co-chair a subcommittee, help with one of our Topic Area Subcommittees (Early Warning, Cloud, Social Media, or Big Data), write an article, lick stamps… (just kidding; I don’t think anyone does that anymore!) We are always happy to welcome volunteers and put them to work. It’s a great chance to meet and get to know the other members of the Committee, which is also a feature of ACC: excellent networking.

I’m so very much looking forward to talking to you all at the 2016 ACC Annual Meeting in San Francisco this year. We’ve got so much happening – we are leading or co-sponsoring seven sessions, and our business meeting will include elections for the executive leadership team. We will also get to socialize with our Fieldfisher partners, as they once again provide not only excellent panel speakers but also a booth in the Exhibit Hall (make sure you stop by).

I will miss being involved in the day-to-day leadership of the committee, but I know that, whomever we elect in October, I will be leaving you in great hands.  Thank you all for you hard work, and I look forward to another successful year!

Greetings from K Royal, Vice-Chair of the ITPEC Committee

Greetings from the IT, Privacy, and eCommerce Committee! We’re deep into preparations for the ACC 2016 Annual Meeting, as I’m sure many of you are also. I look forward to meeting some of you at the Annual Meeting.  There’s so much work that goes into the conference from Committees, Chapters, and ACC, and it’s always a great way to reconnect with your colleagues, meet new ones, and learn about the newest developments in our space. Some of the new movements surround Europe’s data protection laws (more on that below). Our area of practice is one of the hottest in the market so we are always pulled in twenty different directions, forty times a day! In the midst of all of this, please remember that we should all have lives outside of work. Here is a wonderful quote by Steven Spielberg:

"Technology can be our best friend, and technology can also be the biggest party pooper of our lives. It interrupts our own story, interrupts our ability to have a thought or a daydream, to imagine something wonderful, because we're too busy bridging the walk from the cafeteria back to the office on the cell phone."

With that, thank you for taking the time to be a part of our Committee and we welcome any level of involvement that you would like to have. If you want to write, speak, or serve on a subcommittee, contribute ideas – anything, please let us know. We look forward to getting to know you better. ACCITPrivacy@gmail.com
