Message from the Chair

Greetings fellow SLD’ers!

Believe it or not… the Annual Meeting is only a few months away. This is one of my favorite ACC events of the year. If you haven’t registered already and can attend, register as soon as you can. It’s an amazing opportunity for learning and meeting fellow ACC members who you only know by their voice and email signature. This year we are sponsoring and co-sponsoring 9 programs (described below).

The 11th Annual HobNob will be held on Sunday, October 16 at the Golden Gate Club at the Presidio with incredible views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco Bay, and Alcatraz. Busses will leave the convention center starting at 12:30. Invitations will be sent out soon and there will be a nominal fee. Be sure to register ASAP when you receive your invitation as this event sells out quickly.

Our October monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday during lunch (~1:00 PT) at the Annual Meeting so please sign up to attend or call in from your office. Meritas will once again sponsor SLD’s Committee party-watch for an invitation in your email.

Join us for our three-part autumn series of Virtual Round Tables on Advanced contract drafting techniques and tips relating to indemnification, warranties, limitation of liability, insurance, and choice of law/venue clauses. Members can participate in three ways: volunteer to be a panelist, submit questions related to these topics in advance to have them included in the programs, and attend  the programs which will be held in September, October and November.

Keep an eye open for our annual survey in September. We’re shortening the survey and doing it earlier to give all of our members an extra opportunity to guide our programming for next year.

And finally, if you are interested in getting to know your fellow SLD members better, putting together programming, or becoming more active in SLD in other ways, contact our Vice Chair Jeff Wheeler;  he’s putting together our leadership team for next year. This is the BEST way to get to know fellow SLDers and get the most out of your ACC membership. Trust me, you’ll have a great time!

Best Wishes,

Melissa Alexander
SLD Chair

With its wide variety of countries, markets, and economies, Asia as a region has many faces, especially when it comes to labour law. From low labour costs countries to knowledge economies, understanding the challenges and current developments is crucial for any company interested in the region. In this webinar, we invite you to learn more about labour law dynamics in Japan, Singapore and Vietnam. Each country will give a brief presentation covering an overview of its market and the specific challenges one is likely to encounter.

September 9SLD Committee Call and Legal Quick Hit (topic to be announced)

September 13Webcast “Corporate Compliance Served Two Ways: Leveraging Your Compliance Program For When the Government Comes Knocking”

This webcast will address compliance considerations important to in-house counsel from two perspectives: 1) The prospective, prescriptive perspective, from the business transactional lawyer. It will highlight some of the compliance rules and requirements applicable to all or most US businesses. Additionally, it will address some of the policies and guidelines that are an understood part of a modern corporate compliance framework. 2) The retrospective, “lessons learned” perspective, from the white collar criminal defense and compliance lawyer. It will discuss practical takeaways from internal and government investigations that can help inform the construction and application of a compliance program designed to serve its intended purpose of protecting the company from negative government intervention.

Want to Meet SLD Members?

As we all know, being an SLD member is a great resource. But, have you ever thought it would be great to know fellow SLD members in your geographic area? That’s the idea behind micro-networking. We are looking for volunteers to help coordinate introductory micro-networking events at the local chapter level. These events could be a breakfast, a lunch, a happy hour, or even an outing to the local ball game. For more information on how you can volunteer, please contact Gulam Zade, the SLD Chapter Relations Chair.
