Updates From ACC Committees

Chair's Message

This past year, the Litigation Committee has made a priority of reaching out and engaging our members. Our annual survey achieved a 5% response rate, driving a number of programs and outreach initiatives to meet our members’ needs. Additionally, our membership chairs have reached out and sought individual feedback, and each of our committee leaders have sought to tailor activities to member requests. And, we have delivered quality programs focused on our member’s interest. The response has been tremendous! Program attendance has been consistently high, and we have grown membership overall by 7% in less than a year. Thank you for the vote of confidence!

But we are not done yet.

ACC Staff, our sponsors and committee leaders continue to collaborate and we are rolling out more great programs and events this year. So check in with us from time-to-time to discover what your Litigation Committee is up to. And if you have any suggestions, or want to be a presenter or author for the committee, know that we are here to help you be better at what you do, and to give you a forum to develop your own professional skills. Bring it on.

We are proud to start a new feature in this Newsletter, the “Member of the Quarter,” who is Shelley Cordova with Arctic Slope Regional Corporation in Anchorage, Alaska. Shelley describes herself and her job as follows:

I am Senior Corporate Counsel for Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (ASRC), an Alaska Native Corporation with its principal administrative office in Anchorage, AK.  ASRC is a private, for-profit Company with approximately $2.5 billion in annual revenues and 10,000 employees worldwide, but it has a 501(c)(3)-type mission and purpose – to actively manage the Company’s business, lands, resources, and investments to enhance cultural and economic freedom for our 13,000 Iñupiat shareholders.  I am a corporate generalist and handle a wide variety of issues, but my primary responsibilities include managing the Company’s litigation and employment matters.  Before joining ASRC in 2012, I was a litigator– first at Kirkland & Ellis, LLP, and then at Irell & Manella LLP.  I graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 2004.

12 years ago I would never have guessed that my legal career would take me to Anchorage, AK (I’m originally from Los Angeles).  But this unique opportunity and the diverse work intrigued me (we have six very different lines of business), and I was soon smitten with both the Company and this state.  Where else can you fish for King Salmon during your lunch hour?

I’d like to extend both my thanks to the ACC Litigation Committee for this spotlight, and also my appreciation for the Committee’s great work.  Without its resources, it would be much more difficult to stay up-to-date on the legal developments and best practices in what Alaskans call “the lower 48.”

Better still, write for the Litigation Committee’s Blog and raise your visibility! By now you have heard a lot about ACC's effort to showcase our members thought leadership and expertise on the ACC In-house ACCess Blogs. Individual committee members are able to post stories to ACC's main blog, or write a piece as part of a series developed by the committee. And it is a great opportunity to publish without the restrictions and time commitment required of ACC Docket authors.

To review the author guidelines, go to ACC Author Guidelines.

ACC has also published a production schedule, but we are open to publishing topics that fall outside of the proposed schedule. If you have questions, please reach out to Danielle Rawls, Evan Slavitt or Theresa Coetzee.
