Message from the Chair

Hello again SLD colleagues!

Spring has sprung! I hear that Punxsutawney Phil did NOT see his shadow and has predicted an early spring. Here in Southern California we are having a couple weeks of 80+ degree weather but it’s still expected to be followed by cold and deluges of rain as part of El Nino. So I think that Phil might have been just a little confused.  (For our members outside the US, Punxsutawney Phil is a groundhog in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania that comes out of his burrow on 2 February each year (known as Groundhog Day) to predict if winter will continue or if spring is in the air. If it’s sunny and Phil sees his shadow, Phil scoots back into his burrow because winter will continue for another 6 weeks; if it’s cloudy and there’s no shadow, spring is on the way. The tradition has been around in the US since the 1880s. According to this interesting article Phil is accurate only about 40% of the time, which some think is pretty similar to professional meteorologists!)

Like many SLDers, I recently started a new job, so I’m working my way through new processes and new ways of doing business. Luckily, I have my SLD resources to help ease my way into the new role. I’ve already talked to a number of ACC colleagues for input on various issues, checked eGroups for help on a couple of thorny problems, and looked at various resources in the ACC resource library to get some ideas.  The Member-to-Member program (ACC members sharing their expertise on specific topics with fellow members) has been especially helpful to me. Thanks to the many members over the years who have shared their expertise with me.  Whether you’re new to a job or have been there for a long time, ACC’s resources are great tools to get you through the day. I urge you to take advantage of as many of them as you can.

We’ve noticed that there are a lot of recent eGroups postings about contract management software, digital signatures, and demonstrating the value of having the GC report to the CEO. Since these are hot topics for our members, we’re putting together a series of round tables on these topics over the next few months to talk about member experiences, options and best practices. Stay tuned.

Since it’s beautifully sunny and warm out today, I’m off to enjoy the day. Happy Spring!
