Message from Karna Nisewaner - Intellectual Property Committee Chair

Welcome

As we kick off a new year of the ACC IP Committee, I want to thank all the wonderful committee members who have made the last year a great year for the IP Committee.  As I enter my second year as chair, I am excited for a great year of programing as we strive to provide more material that can be valuable to our committee members. We are looking to provide more material around Trade Secrets and practical tips for how to deal with what can be a difficult area.  We look forward to hearing back from all of you on what areas interest you, from Patents, to Trademarks, to Copyrights to any of the many topics that come up in the IP arena.

Karna Nisewaner

Thomas Feix Selected as ACC IP Committee Member of Year

Thomas Feix was honored with the Intellectual Property (IP) Committee’s Judith A. Powell Excellence in IP Award for his vision, service and commitment to the IP Committee. Tom has shown a strong aptitude for being a true team player and leader whether it's, leading or co-leading two committees, Quick Counsel and Quick Hit, assisting with the PTO initiatives, volunteering to be a speaker or program organizer or trying to help find panelists at the eleventh hour when another has cancelled.  He has never hesitated to lend a hand when needed or volunteer to lead.  We all appreciate his valuable help and support.

Title:  2014 Year in Review – The Year Patent Practice Changed

Brief Summary:  Patents were a popular subject with the United States Supreme Court and International Trade Commission (ITC) with earnest efforts toward legislative patent reform. Post-grant administrative challenges to patents emerged as the favorite alternative to patent litigation and became a crucial tool to complement any litigation. Seemingly everyone is trying to change the way patent practitioners practice. This moving landscape has caused patent litigation and prosecution to fundamentally change in a way that all must reevaluate their strategies and approaches to patent practice.

Speaker:  Thomas D. Franklin, Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP

Denver PTO Opening Event

On June 30, 2014, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office opened its Rocky Mountain Regional Satellite Office.  In connection with the opening, they hosted several events including a Gala held at the Wings Over the Rockies museum.  The ACC IP Committee and the ACC Colorado Chapter, sponsored by Kilpatrick Townsend, hosted a breakfast CLE discussion that educated our members on the recent Supreme Court decisions and their impact on in-house counsel.  Our panelists were Dion Messer, Associate General Counsel of IP for Limelight Networks, Glen Johnson, Associate General Counsel of Patents for Microsoft, and Thomas Franklin and Brian O’Donnell from Kilpatrick Townsend.  The conversation was lively and informative and gave our members a first glimpse into how our in-house practice changed in view of CLS Bank v. Alice, Akamai v Limelight Networks, and the other Supreme Court cases decided in the last term.  Thank you to our panelists and thank you to Kilpatrick for sponsoring.

Thank You Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP

During 2014, Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP provided the Intellectual Property Committee with excellent support and co-hosted with our committee a great reception at the Annual Meeting. Over 40 subject matter experts at Kilpatrick spent countless hours collaborating with the IP Committee to create a wealth of valuable materials for the ACC, as well as sponsoring the committee’s event during the opening of the USPTO Denver Satellite office.  We very much appreciate their collaboration and support.
